Commercial photo demo: Gorongosa BrandsBeekeeping in Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park is a regional tradition. Local beekeeping using bark hives and logs has long been a part of the subsistence economy of people who inhabit all the forests in the park's buffer zone. Yet, recent increases in the demand for low-quality honey is driving a growing number of regional beekeepers to cut down trees and start uncontrolled fires, putting the regional Mozambican forests increasingly at risk. The park’s honey project facilitates beekeeper access to sustainable beekeeping practices by using locally sourced beehives from a sustainably managed forest and handmade bee suits for protection

Gorongosa Zebra ReleaseVeterinarian/wildlife expert, Louis Van Wyk, ushers a dazzle of zebras out of their fenced boma in the Gorongosa sanctuary. Twenty-one zebras have been living safely in the large enclosure for the past few years waiting for ideal conditions before release. With their numbers up, and a very secure park interior, the zebras will now roam freely as the hopeful seeds of a population that once roamed the floodplains in the thousands.

Putting a GPS backpack on a rescued PangolinThis is “Pangolima”, Gorongosa’ National Park’s first pangolin to be outfitted with a tiny GPS backpack. She had been escued from the illegal wildlife trade by a community leader near the park, and park veterinarians quickly tagged Pangolima and released her back into the wild. Her movements are now monitored to ensure her safety and prevent her from falling into poachers’ hands.Gorongosa National Park is one of Africa’s greatest restoration success stories. Ecologically decimated by the Mozambican war from 1977-1992, the park has been restored as one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems. But, the illegal trade of bushmeat, wildlife, and wildlife parts still exists in the shadows. Pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world, their scales being highly valued in the black market of Asia.

Elephant DefenseTo many, firecrackers are for celebrations. But for these people in the Gorongosa buffer-zone, it's for defense. Elephants sneak onto their land at night, raiding their crops and destroying much of their only source of food. But firecrackers are one of the few methods that work at scaring them off. I spent the past few days with locals, following them through their fields in the middle of the night as they would shoot these over the gigantic thieves' heads. It's unnerving how quiet elephants are for their size; you can only hear the snap of a few corn stalks as they run away in the darkness, momentarily illuminated by the exploding streams of pyrotechnics.
